Things to Do in January in Fredericksburg TX

January is when Fredericksburg really shows its personality and the town’s creative, music-loving, wine-sipping spirit comes alive. This is a month made for wandering Main Street, lingering over a glass of Texas wine, and discovering why Fredericksburg should be at the top of your travel bucket list this year.

Weather Update

Following Winter Storm Fern, Fredericksburg is open for business. Most businesses, lodging properties, wineries, and attractions are operating as normal. Please check directly with individual businesses for current hours or availability, and refer to TxDOT and the City of Fredericksburg for road conditions or any specific closures.

From art shows and live music to outdoor adventures and cozy dinners, January is full of reasons to lean into Fredericksburg’s vibrant Hill Country vibe.

Check out our January picks below or search the events calendar to see everything happening during your visit.

Hang Out on Main Street

Main Street is the heartbeat of Fredericksburg, and January is one of the best times to experience it. You can take your time popping into boutiques, art galleries, tasting rooms, and specialty shops that give downtown its unmistakable character. Make sure to visit the Warehouse District, just a block off Main Street, where you'll find unique home goods and antique stores, upscale dining, and more.

This is where old-school German roots meet modern Hill Country cool. You will find thoughtfully curated shops, bold art, handcrafted goods, and restaurants that feel both elevated and unpretentious. When hunger hits, downtown delivers everything from laid-back Tex-Mex and BBQ to polished dining rooms that punch well above their weight for a town this size.

With a new year underway, January is the perfect time to lean into new experiences, take your time exploring new restaurants, chat with local shop owners, and soak up the energy of Fredericksburg with a refreshed perspective.

Visit a Local Winery

Fredericksburg is Texas Wine Country, and January is prime time for wine lovers who prefer a more relaxed tasting experience with plenty of time to ask questions and try something new. Many wineries host special winter events during January, adding to the experience.

Get Outside and Explore the Hill Country

January weather makes getting outside easy. Days are cool and comfortable, perfect for hiking, scenic drives, and soaking in Hill Country views without the summer heat.

For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, plan a visit to The Preserve. This immersive attraction offers guided encounters with Asian elephants, where guests can learn about conservation efforts, participate in hands-on care experiences, and enjoy up-close photo opportunities. Many January visits include seasonal pricing, making it a great time to experience something unforgettable. Reservations are required.

If you prefer to explore on foot, Fredericksburg offers several easy ways to enjoy the outdoors close to town. Cross Mountain Park features a short hike with beautiful views overlooking downtown Fredericksburg.

A hike at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a must for first-time visitors and repeat travelers alike. The views from the summit never get old, and winter temperatures make the climb more enjoyable. Reservations are recommended, even this time of year.

For a more relaxed pace, head to Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, where walking trails wind through natural landscapes along Live Oak Creek. The park includes a one-mile walking trail, a 500-foot accessible trail, and a peaceful bird feeding area and butterfly habitat connected by the Vista Loop Trail.

Step Inside a Museum

Fredericksburg’s creative energy is matched by its deep sense of history. If winter weather turns chilly, Fredericksburg’s museums provide meaningful indoor experiences.

The National Museum of the Pacific War, a Smithsonian Affiliate accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is a standout with exhibits that honor those who served in World War II and tell powerful stories through artifacts and personal accounts. The museum recently reopened its primary exhibition space, the George H. W. Bush Gallery, following its first comprehensive renovation since 2009. The updated gallery features redesigned layouts, new interpretive storytelling, immersive media, and never-before-seen displays that bring the history of the Pacific Theater to life in engaging and meaningful ways.

A short walk away, the Pioneer Museum offers a look at early German settler life and the foundations that shaped the town you see today.

Experience Fredericksburg’s Art Scene

January is a great time to explore Fredericksburg’s creative side. The Winter Art Show at the Fredericksburg Art Guild runs through the winter months and showcases work from local and regional artists.

Visitors can also plan around the First Friday Art Walk, when galleries stay open late and downtown takes on a lively evening atmosphere.

Go on a Ghost Tour

January nights bring crisp air and just the right mood for something unexpected. A Haunted Fredericksburg Ghost Walk explores the town after dark, mixing local lore with historic streets and buildings. It is a fun way to experience Fredericksburg from a different angle and one of the more memorable ways to end an evening downtown.

Attend a January Event

A few standout events give the month its own rhythm:

  • Fredericksburg Trade Days
A massive monthly market with more than 350 vendors selling antiques, furniture, crafts, jewelry, clothing, and one-of-a-kind finds. Live music and a Biergarten make it easy to stay awhile.
  • Hill Country Gem & Mineral Show
A longtime winter favorite featuring gemstones, minerals, demonstrations, and educational displays.
  • Luckenbach Blues Festival
A day-long blues celebration at the iconic Luckenbach dancehall, where live music is always part of the story.
